Palace of Versailles
The Palace of Versailles, one of France’s most iconic monuments, is a symbol of the power and grandeur of absolute monarchy. Located on the outskirts of Paris, it began as a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII, but it was transformed and expanded by Louis XIV until it became one of the most impressive royal residences in Europe. Its majestic architecture, lavishly decorated halls, and extensive gardens have made it a landmark of 17th-century art and luxury.
It contains an exceptional ensemble of royal rooms, galleries, chapels, and apartments that reflect the splendour of the French court. Among its most remarkable spaces are the Hall of Mirrors, the King’s and Queen’s State Apartments, and the Royal Chapel. Each of these places offers insight into how life at court was organised and how art was also used as a tool of political representation.
Within this extraordinary monumental complex, the gardens designed by André Le Nôtre also stand out as a masterpiece of French landscape design. Fountains, sculptures, geometric parterres, and grand avenues create a setting intended to impress and to extend the magnificence of the palace into the open air.
