The Louvre Museum, located in the heart of Paris, is the most visited art museum in the world and one of the most important international cultural centers. Housed in a former royal palace that was the residence of French monarchs since the Middle Ages, it opened its doors as a public museum in 1793 after the French Revolution. It currently houses more than 35,000 works ranging from ancient civilizations to the art of the nineteenth century.
