Guggenheim Museum
The Guggenheim Museum is one of the most internationally prominent museums of modern and contemporary art and also one of the most important architectural works of the 20th century. Its impact is measured not only by its impressive art collection, but also by the transformation it has brought about in the city of Bilbao, turning it into a cultural and economic symbol.
Its inauguration in 1997 was aimed at transforming the declining industrial area of Bilbao into a modern cultural and tourist centre. The museum is part of a wider urban regeneration plan that sought to revitalise the port and outlying areas of the city. Today, it has positioned Bilbao as a cultural destination, receiving more than 1.3 million visitors annually. This urban planning project has influenced the development of other cities such as Denver or Düsseldorf, under the phenomenon known as the ‘Guggenheim effect’.
Frank Gehry, who designed the building, wanted to represent the city's industrial roots while creating a structure that symbolised modernity. He designed the building using materials such as titanium, glass and limestone, giving it a modern, industrial and futuristic look. The glass panels allow natural light to flow into the space, providing a sense of transparency that invites visitors to enjoy the views of the city. On the other hand, the nearly 33,000 titanium plates used to clad the museum allowed Gehry to play with the shapes and hues that visitors would see from the outside. He also played with perspective: seen from the river Nervión, the museum appears to be a boat, while seen from above, it is shaped like a flower.
The museum has 20 galleries offering visitors contemporary works by artists such as Richard Serra, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol. In addition, not only can you find art inside the museum, but great innovative works such as Fujiko Nakaya's Fog, Anish Kapoor's Big Tree and Eye and Jeff Koons' Tulips are also on display outside the museum. Other sculptures, such as Mama, the work of Louise Bourgeois, and Jeff Koons' floral puppy Puppy, have become icons of the museum for visitors.
